Eat more fresh vegetable and fruits. When vegetables are over-cooked they lose a lot of their natural vitamins and minerals. Stay away from too much sugar, fatty meats, and white flour.
Take a supplement that includes calcium, magnesium, and potassium. A lack of any of these can cause leg cramps. By taking a supplement you’ll be sure you’re getting enough of all three even if your regular diet doesn’t.
Drink more water. Being dehydrated is a major cause of muscle cramping along with a host of other health issues. Cut down or eliminate sugary, caffeinated drinks and drink as much water as you can. This is even more true if you live in a hot climate or work out a lot.

Causes of Leg Cramps
When we use our muscles that can be controlled voluntarily (arms and legs), they contract and relax alternately as we move our arms and legs. Similarly, the muscles that support our head, neck, neck and trunk are synchronized to hold our posture. When a muscle or just a few fibers of it that contracts involuntarily, it is called a spasm, and if this is forceful and sustained, it turns into a cramp. Therefore a leg cramp is an unwillingly and forcibly contracted muscle that does not relax. Leg cramps can last from just a few seconds to fifteen minutes. On the other hand, the entire, or several muscles may be involved in a leg cramp. Leg cramps pain especially in the calf.
Causes of Leg Cramps
Leg Cramps involve part or all of a single muscle or a group of muscles that in general act together. Most doctors agree that these cramps are caused by hyper excitability of the nerves that stimulate the muscles. Leg cramps are usually caused by:
Injury: A persistency muscle spam could happen as a protective mechanism following an injury such as a fractured bone. In this case, the spam tends to lower its movement and stabilize the area of injury. A muscle injury may cause the muscle to spasm.
Vigorous Activity: Leg cramps are linked with the vigorous use of muscles or muscle fatigue in sports or with unusual strenuous activities. They sometimes persist frequently and are very painful. The real cause of night cramps is unknown. An example is pointing the toe down while laying in bed, which shortens the calf muscle, a common place for cramps.
Dehydration: Sports and vigorous activities can cause excessive fluid loss from perspiration which increases the likelihood of leg cramps. Leg cramps are more likely in warm weather and can be an early sign of heart stroke. Chronic volume depletion of body fluids from diuretics and poor fluid intake may act similarly to predispose to cramps in the elderly. Loss of sodium is usually a function of dehydration.
Low Blood Calcium, Magnesium: These may be predisposing factors for the spontaneous leg cramps experienced by many older adults, as well as for those noted during pregnancy
Contractures: Results when the muscles of the leg are unable to relax. The constant spasms are cause by a depletion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an energy chemical within the cell. This prevents muscle fiber relaxation. The nerves are inactive in the form of muscle spam. Contractures can be inherited or acquired.

Ankle Swelling and Leg Cramp Relief For Pregnant Women
Some common conditions that pregnant women face are ankle swelling, wrist swelling, and leg cramps. These can easily be remedied or prevented altogether by paying more attention to our pillars of support – the legs and feet! In pregnancy, swollen ankles and feet usually need three simple things: hydration, rotation and elevation of the legs.
Hydration

The Causes and Proper Treatment of Muscle Cramps
Initially, muscle cramps may sound like a very minor problem. However, they can actually be very painful. During cramps, there is an excessive and overextended contraction of the muscle. A person’s leg muscle is the most likely to suffer fro cramps.
Cramps can be caused by a lot of different reasons, but the most common is poor diet, and the failure to properly warm up before exercising. A few of the other causes associated with cramps include not drinking enough water, not eating enough potassium, having a sodium imbalance, sitting stationary for long periods of time, or not having enough vitamins.
Some studies have also shown that build up of lactic acid, repetitive motions, low circulation and hot weather are also factors contributing to muscle cramps.
Although muscle cramps are fairly common, they are rather easy to get rid of as well. There is no permanent damage left on the body, and the pain itself goes away pretty quickly. You should be wary however if the pain originates in the lower right region of your stomach, as this may indicate a symptom of appendicitis. You should get this checked right away if you suspect having this illness. A great way to check is to push into your stomach. If there is only pain when you release after pushing in, you should get it examined by a physician as soon as possible.
Some of the most commonly used methods to get rid of cramps include applying heat to the area either via a heat compress or by taking a nice long bath. You can choose to add Epsom salt to the water as this will help to naturally sooth your muscles. Massaging wintergreen oil onto the cramp and drinking tonic water before sleeping helps. Finally, eating enough vitamin E and stretching the cramp out are also great ways to treat muscle cramps.

Common Medical Treatments For PMS
Menstrual cramps are the result of contractions in the uterus (a muscle). Excessive contractions can press against nearby blood vessels cutting off the oxygen supply to the muscle tissue. The brief loss of oxygen is what causes the pain. Symptoms of menstrual cramps can include aches and pains in joints, muscles, and abdomen, a feeling of pressure in the abdomen, and pain in the hips, lower back, and inner thighs. You may also experience loose stools.
There are two main types of dysmenorrhea (i.e., painful cramps) that you may feel during your period. These are primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrheal.
Primary dysmenorrheal refers to usual menstrual cramping. These cramps can start about one or two years after a woman’s first period. They can last for between one and three days. These symptoms may cease after childbirth and generally and gradually dissipate with age. Secondary dysmenorrhea refers to a disorder in which pain is caused by problems in the woman’s reproductive organs and generally lasts longer than ordinary cramping.
How do you know if cramps are serious enough for medical attention? Generally, cramping that lasts more than three days could be a sign of trouble. If this occurs, promptly see your primary care physician. Many women know of at least one over-the-counter medication that can alleviate some of the effects of PMS. Among them are Midol, aspirin, Tylenol (acetaminophen), Motrin (ibuprofen), and Aleve (naproxen). You should take these medications as soon as bleeding or cramping begins and in most cases, these medications should be taken with food.
There are three major tests which have been developed which describe PMS. These tests are the Visual Anague Scales (VAS), Calendar of Premenstrual syndrome Experiences (COPE), and the Prospective Record of the Impact and Severity of Menstruation (PRISM).
Cramping associated with diseases is referred to as secondary dysmenorrhea. This condition can be caused by endometriosis (a problem with the tissue lining of the uterus), pelvic inflammatory disease (an infection starting in the uterus and spreading to other reproductive organs), stenosis of the cervix in which the cervix is narrowed, (this condition is often caused by scarring) and tumors (also referred to as fibroids). Fibroids are growths in the uterus.
If you use tampons and have any of the following symptoms, promptly seek medical attention. These could result from a life-threatening condition referred to as “toxic shock syndrome.”
Fever over 102º (F)
Diarrhea
Dizziness, fainting, or risk of fainting
Vomiting
Development of a rash resembling a sunburn
Talk to your doctor. Your doctor may want to conduct a pelvic examination searching for the presence of lumps and may also want to conduct other tests after taking a small sample of your vaginal fluid if your symptoms are serious enough. In a pelvic examination, the doctor will insert a speculum (letting the doctor see inside the vagina) and will examine your vagina, cervix, and uterus.
Two prescriptions which are often recommended by physicians for cramps are Nurofen and Mefenamic Acid (also referred to as Ponstan).

Leg cramp treatment is normally easy and you can often do it yourself, at very little cost.

Cramping During Pregnancy – How to Deal With This Discomfort?
Most pregnant women have some degree of cramping during pregnancy that is usually the result of digestion problems, stretched muscles and ligatures, or Braxton Hicks contractions. However, cramping of any kind during pregnancy should be reported to a physician as, in some cases, they could be the first sign of a more serious problem.
First Trimester
Cramping can occur within a few days of becoming pregnant and usually precedes a positive pregnancy test. When the fertilized egg exits the fallopian tube it enters the uterus where it sinks into the thick lining of the uterus. When implantation occurs, some women will have mild cramping much like the first day or two of a regular menstrual cycle.
Each pregnancy is different and some women experience mild cramping with a light discharge during the first trimester. Implantation bleeding is also possible without risk of miscarriage. Cramping after a woman knows for sure she is pregnant should be reported immediately to her doctor. Cramping, when accompanied by vaginal discharge or bleeding, together symptoms of miscarriage are more a cause for alarm, than if both miscarriage-symptoms are not present.
Ectopic Pregnancy
You should always immediately report severe pain or cramping on one side of the abdomen. Some women will be sensitive to certain foods and experience pain during digestion, but severe pain is one of the ectopic pregnancy symptoms and can occur without bleeding.
Ectopic pregnancies result when the fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the uterus including the fallopian tube, ovary, or abdomen. Most ectopic pregnancies present themselves before ultrasounds can detect a normal pregnancy.
Urinalysis, blood work and laparoscopy are usually done when severe cramping occurs during pregnancy, to confirm an ectopic pregnancy. IVF and fertility drugs can increase a woman’s chances of an ectopic pregnancy, so proper monitoring by the physician during the first weeks of pregnancy is important.
Second Trimester
As the baby gains weight, additional pressure is placed on the muscles and ligatures of the abdomen causing regular second trimester cramping. Consistent cramping, especially if the cramps are regular in duration and time between them is regular, should be reported to the doctor.
This type of cramping may be the signal of the onset of pre-term labor, which in many cases can be stopped if caught soon enough. Braxton Hicks contractions are another common second trimester cause of cramping. Unlike true labor pains, Braxton contractions are irregular, disappear in a few minutes or hours and are more uncomfortable than painful.
Regardless of what trimester you are in, any cramping during pregnancy should be reported to your physician. Erring on the side of caution is always best for you and your baby.
Helpful Hints
There are a few things that a woman can do to help reduce or eliminate cramping during pregnancy and some may provide long lasting relief.
Eat a well balanced diet and avoid foods that cause gas and bloating. Cramping can be caused by the pressure on the digestive tract during pregnancy and the changes in hormones may cause certain foods to be difficult or uncomfortable to digest.
Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, will ensure proper hydration and may reduce both digestive cramps and Braxton Hicks contractions.
Walking, applying a hot water bottle and gentle abdominal massage will help move gas through the digestive track.
Warm baths may also help but check with your doctor first especially if you are nearing the end of your pregnancy.
Bending into a cramp can help relieve the discomfort as will a change of position, sit down if you have been standing and walk if you have been sitting.
Cramping during pregnancy in most cases is benign and should not be cause for concern. Always report any cramping especially cramping with bleeding to you physician regardless of what stage of pregnancy you are in.

9. The herbs Blue Cohosh and Black Cohosh are very useful in reducing the uterine spasms and cramps.
